This
is a small but memorable film, described by reviewer Michele Pinczuk as “the
Jewish version of P.D. Eastman’s Are You My Mother? But instead of the baby
bird asking, ‘Are you my mother?’ cultural, secular Jews in the film ask,
‘Are you Jewish without being religious?’”
Director Kate Feiffer (cartoonist Jules Feiffer’s daughter) made this film
to try and understand the strange relationship between non-practicing and
religious Jews in America. She tells personal stories, along with guest
opinions from friends like Mike Wallace, Walter Shapiro, Daphne Merkin, Alan
Dershowitz and more.
The film brilliantly combines animation, archival photos and cartoons.
Pinczuk concludes: “a funky and cleverly executed documentary with a Spike
Lee flavor, due to its cinematic style and vibe. But perhaps the most
entertaining segment is near the end of the presentation. It’s a clip of the
‘don’ of the cultural yet secular Jew: Larry David on the HBO show, Curb
Your Enthusiasm.”

Director Kate Feiffer
will join us after the film. Talk with Kate (Cartoonist Jules Feiffer's
daughter!) as she gives us insight into an ambivalent upbringing that is
becoming more and more common in today's disintegrating Jewish community
