Richard Corliss wrote in Time, “Ludwig Satz, the gifted tummler who
prefigures such mainstream American clowns as Sid Caesar and Jerry Lewis,
gets to strut his gallery of stuff!”
Against his uncle’s stern warning that all women are only on the lookout for
a fat pocketbook, handsome actor Eddie Wien decides to get married. The
uncle bets Eddie $10,000 (oy vey - in 1936!) that he cannot find a woman who
isn’t after his money. To put his love interest, Golde—and her sex—to the
test, Eddie pretends to be repulsive millionaire Herman Weingarten and tries
to get Golde to refuse his offer of marriage. Golde, who has a crush on
Eddie, initially resists “Herman,” but . . .
Come watch the triumphant Ludwig Satz play two roles, and see if - and when
- Eddie reveals his true identity. This is just plain wonderful!
