Jake Groden (of Brooklyn’s furniture Grodens) is an ex-con who has returned
to the family just in time for his twin brother’s funeral. He says, “When
you sand, you’re tearing at the surface.” (And Jake’s grain is raised by the
abrasive presence of his father Leo, who in life loved his son Mike more
than Jake -- and still does now that Mike is gone.) “But when you plane,”
Jake concludes, “the grain remains true and clear.”
Leo (Judd Hirsch) is so oblivious he convinces himself that his grandson
Adam is poised to take over the shop. But Adam has no interest - until he
meets long-lost Uncle Jake, bringer-of-romance-to-woodwork.
The actors deliver strong performances. Director Yellin’s steady hand behind
the camera and an original score by Duncan Sheik, whose Broadway musical
Spring Awakening recently won eight Tony awards, make this one terrific
film.

Special Guest Appearance May 14th in Ann Arbor and May 15 in Windsor, by
Todd Yellin,
director of Brother’s Shadow: Todd joins us at two locations
to discuss his wonderful film. Questions welcome!
