“...a prescient flash of a film, warning about the future of sport in
America...”

This movie is so well done that it’s great even after 60 years!
In addition to capturing the essence of the boxing world at the time, Jewish
leading man John Garfield was able to take a secular film and show the
striving of Jewish athletes to use sports to enter the mainstream of
American life (there’s no doubt that Charlie is Jewish or that his ambition
is emblematic of the fight to be American).
This cautionary tale also shows the temptations of success: how easily a big
star can be brought low by corruption and the failure to see what is really
happening.
Great acting, super boxing scenes and an ending that keeps you
Preceded
at 9 a.m. by a brunch of bagels, cream cheese, coffee, juice, and who knows
what else. A Bagel brunch, classic jock movie and talk. Brunch co-sponsored
by Evelyn & Harvey Goldsmith and New York Bagels so you know they’ll be
good.
